Owned and operated by a mildly insane but good natured dutchman, Cafe Del Mar is located right on the beach in Chaloklum Bay just outside the main village. As the name suggests, the atmosphere is chilled and the music has a house vibe.
By day, Cafe del Mar operates as a water sports center offering pick ups to Chaloklum from Haadrin and other points of the island for Wakeup Wakeboarding. They also supply Sumo suits and, for the truly mad, an inflatable kite that you can be pulled behind the boat on. If jet skis are your thing, the owner can easily arrange those as well.
In terms of food, the menu is simple but good – sandwiches, Dutch cheese and coldcut specials when supplies are available. Spicy dutch meatballs, a specialty of the house, are cooked using grandma’s recipe.
Evenings at Cafe del Mar see inexpensive regular weekly barbecues and theme buffets. The Indian buffet is especially popular, but come early, or Koh Phangan’s resident divers and locals will beat you to it.
If it is a sunset drink you are after, Cafe del Mar offer a cheap drink special – mini highballs for 50 baht.
